I'd like to get an aftermarket stereo for my
68 daily driver mustang, which has the factory
(padded) console. I want it to fit in the stock
location, which limits my options... I would
like it to be as simple a bolt in as possible
without much monkey-ing around, and definately
not modifying my console...

I've looked at the offerings by custom autosound
and "Ken Harrison Ent. Inc". Most of the mustang
catalogs carry radios made by these guys. Also
custom autosound has a web page....
custom-autosound.com/

The application guide on the web page doesn't say
anything about an exception for 68's with consoles...

Anyway, I had kind of decided on one of the
Kenwood models offered by Custom Autosound, but
I was wondering if it would really fit given
that I have the 68 console (I had a nagging recollection
that there was some issue with 68 consoles...).
So I gave Custom Autosound a call on the phone.

I asked the person that answered the phone which
stereos would fit a 68 mustang, the response was something
like "we have numerous stereos to fit that application."
Then I mentioned that I had the padded console, and then
the person said something like, "oh, then the only
stereo is the USA-01". But the person wasn't very chatty
or full of detailed explanations of why...

So, I'm wondering what experience other people have with
fitting radios in to 68's, especially with the factory
console...

Also, anybody have any opinions on the USA-01. I'm thinking
about getting it because it would probably suit my needs
and I kind of like the fact I can get it with a chrome face.
Also the fact that the price is (relatively) low is pleasing...
Also I seem to recall hearing good things about Custom Autosound
as far as support and repairs go on this mailing list.

I talked to a guy at John's Mustangs who said any of the
radios would fit my 68... but I wonder if he had actually
tried to fit on in a 68 w/console...

Anyway... anybody been able to fit anything but a USA01
with a 68 console?

The following web page I just found, seems to back-up what
I found out from Custom Autosound... i.e. there seems to be
a different part number for 68's with padded consoles:
mustangsplus.com/newpart/stereos/

Anybody have anything good or bad to say about custom autosound
and/or the USA01 radio?

How about Ken Harrison ent Inc? John's Mustang carries their
line as well, and the guy I talked to at John's said they are
as good as the custom autosound stuff...

Chris

Hi Chris

I have a custom Autosound in my 68 with a console. That's the good news,
thebad news is that it doesn't fit quite right. The dials for adjusting
various stuff, like bass, and left to right tuning (I think, can't remember
exactly) are controlled by large dials that fit behind the volume knobs. With
the console, those dials, (the ouside rings) don't stick out so you can adjust
them. In fact with a console you can't put the larger diameter outer rings on.
The holes through the front pad daren't big enough. You can still stick the
knobs on, then if you need to adjust one of the ohters, just pull the knob
off.
I hope it makes sense (I don't know how to eplain it.)
regards,
Marcus Miller
68 coupe Pearl White (New steering bracket)
68 coupe red/blue/primer (minus some radio controls)
66 T-Bird Townlandau (Steers fine; still has the original radio)
