Today I had an oppotunity to closely examine my 65 Fastback after I sent it
to Redi-Strip in Allentown, Pa. I highly recommend this process to anyone
restoring their car. It truely reveals the cars history, something media
blasting alone cant do. I found something very disappointing, my car had
been hit all over and was basically welded back together ( very poorly )
with brass...goes to show you how long ago this car was wrecked. I found
that alot of the rust on the car had actually pitted the metal in certain
places. Is there a way of strengthening this metal? It sort of looks like
potted metal. There are many spots on the car that will have to be replaced,
but there are some difficult places ( around the rear window ) that I cannot
find reproduction pieces for. I called Eastwoods technical line and they
havent returned my call yet. Id like something to put over this pitted metal
to strengthen it so I dont have to find replacement pieces. Im about to go
purchase a welder. Which should I buy? Tig, Mig, electric with the sticks?
as you can see this will be my first welding job) There is no chasis rot,
the frame rails are good, I just have to replace the floor boards and some
small sheet metal work. Id also like to go over each and every factory weld
with a long stream of weld, unlike the spot welds used from the factory to
further strengthen the body. Im also putting a GT350R roll cage in with
subframe connectors, I plan on welding these in as well. I may need some
help or a good teacher, anyone in the NJ area who can help me Id gladly pay
for their time and expertise.

Just to share a thought. Had one car dipped and I would never do it
again. Problems with leaching and the removal of all the sounddeadener
and chalking added for alot of work. Could understand it if I lived in
an are where cars had rust in them...... well maybe.

It cost me $1400 for the car, trunk, 2 doors and a fender. Would have been a
bit more with a hood and another fender.
