On 01/15/98 I was turning into the driveway at work just as an older
gentleman realized he had turned into the wrong driveway, aiming rather for
the Life Care Center one driveway over. He decided, instead of following
the loop back around to the street, he would just back out onto the street
(without looking). I was stopped, still on the street at an angle behind
him when he struck the front passenger corner of my most prized possession
in this world (a `67 Mustang) after I honked hysterically.

It was knocked out of alignment, the less than 6-month old Nordan bumper
was destroyed, as well as the valance, stone deflector, and right fender.
The headlamp bucket may be cracked, and is missing a huge chunk where the
bumper mashed it. I think that the turn signal bezel and mounting parts
will need to be replaced as well as all the bumper brackets and
stabilizers. The man denied my car being damaged and suffered only a 3/4"
scratch in his Chevy Silvarado bumper. After an investigation, the other
driver was determined to be at fault (duh.) and his State Farm insurance is
going to be taking care of the damages, although their first estimate is
about 1/2 of what it will actually cost to replace with LIKE parts rahter
than their "quality replacements".

I was wondering if anyone has had to deal with claims on a older Mustang
like this, and what I should expect. Any advice or tips in handling this
would be very helpful as I am very stressed. I was also wondering if
anyone knows if/where an NOS `67 RH fender and/or headlamp bucket are
available (I haven't checked in catalogs yet--plan on that tomorrow, and
REALLY checking out the damages). I don't want to have to use
reproductions unless originals are not available.

I would really love any information anybody could provide me with.

Whether its a Mustang, a Cougar, or just grandmom's ol'
Rambler, the principle is the same: get *at least two*
written estimates from people resembling a professional
or an acknowledged authority. In this case, your local
Mustang vendor(s) will do...they'll just need to itemize
the cost of a proper repair and put this in light of the
car's pre-collision condition/market value. A letter to
accompany these won't hurt, either, as would receipts of
previous repairs.

Basically, *your* task is to show this is not an average,
used Mustang - much less a typical used car of the 1960s.
Faced with the potential of either binding arbitration or
litigation, there are few adjusters who won't wise up and
hand over the difference between estimates.

I've had some bad experiences with State Farm in particular on other
claims. Get estimates from the best people you can on the cost of repairs
and go ahead and hire a lawyer. I've never seen State Farm pay for all of
the damages in an accident based on 3 instances in 2 different states.
Best of luck

Don

Alison:

If you have the receipts for parts you've replaced during your
restoration you should forward copies to the insurance company. I've
been told to always keep your receipts for everything you do to a
classic car in the event you have to deal with insurance companies.

My lawyer friend says that State Farm and Nationwide are the two worst
companies to deal with when submitting claims in my area. I hope you
have better luck!

Regards,

Paul

alison: not to beat the proverbial dead horse here, but depending on
what state you live in, the law may require the at fault driver, usually
by way of his insurance company, to make you whole. this is read
literally if you care to fight it through the insurance commission. i
do it for people all the time. you must find out what your state
requires the at fault person to do. if it is a lot of money it is
probably worth it. an attorney may be worth it, but the insurance
commission may also help you to a limited extent.
