Well, it happened.
My son wrecked his 66 coupe tonight.
He wasn't paying enough attention to the car in front of him, and slammed
right into it!!!
I haven't finished assessing the damage yet, but I figure about $2500 in
body damage to his car. The hood, the bumper, the valence, grill, radiator
support, radiator, both fenders & headlight buckets. I think I can
percussion engineer most of the damage to the inner fenders & aprons.
>From what I can see, the frame looks straight. I'll have to get a tape
measure on it and measure the distance between the frame rails at various
points to be sure, also pull a string from the front corner to the opposite
rear corner and make sure it's still square (or at least as square as it
ever was from the factory)...
What's worrying me the most is the engine and tranny. The radiator pushed
into the fan and stopped the engine cold. I can't cut out the radiator
support and remove the radiator from the engine until the insurance adjuster
gets a look at it. So I don't know if the engine has been damaged yet. I
imagine the water pump is probably shot since it took a lot of the brute
force when the radiator slammed into it.
I'm also worried about the tranny. When we got the car off the towtruck and
pushed it into my driveway, I put it in park, but it wouldn't hold. It
goes "click click click" and rolls backwards. I had to put chucks behind
the tires and put on the parking brake to keep it from rolling.
Any idea what's going on with the tranny? Could it have knocked the shifter
linkage out of adjustment, or is there probably more serious internal damage
going on?
I'll try to post some pics on my website in the next day or so. Right now
I'm hoping to keep the ins. Co from totaling it. I'd like to fix most of it
myself. Replacing the fenders & radiator core support aren't that big a
deal for me. But I'm not so confident that I can rebuild the engine myself.
A head gasket sure, but I've never tackled the engine itself.
We have a spare car he can drive while we rebuild his.
Lance.

Lance,
If the engine took a big hit on the water pump its probable the engine frame
mounts are bend backwards and possibly the rear tranny mount too. If (say)
they moved back an inch or so then the transmission selectors will be out of
adjustment at the very least and perhaps bent outta shape..
I would guess that the tranny itself is just fine otherwise... , and odds on
the engine is too other than obvious replacement of the water pump and any
front metalwork that is bent inwards. Remotely possible some bits have been
busted off the block but that can also repaired if not too drastic
Good luck.. make sure your son does most of the work...;-))

Very sorry to hear about the car - glad your son is OK.
If it's not losing fluids, probably the tranny and motor are fine. Maybe.
You will want to cut the rad support out, then try to extract the
engine/trans as a unit and check for damage. Look very closely at the bell
housing area and the tail section as those will be most likely to get
damaged. Also look at the oil pan, make sure it didn't move back into
anything. I don't imagine the water pump stopped the engine - the belts
would slip or break first. Most likely contact with the balancer. So it
and the pulleys are probably scrap.

I'll be posting more pictures as daylight and time permit.
I guess if the insurance co. agrees to let us fix it, then I'll be starting
ProjectPhoenix in the coming weeks.

My biggest concern was that nobody was hurt. And thankfully yes, nobody was
hurt.
Yes, that cap is available! My son has them custom made from somebody. He
has them make a matching gas cap too!
I have them both on my car too.
They're both made from billet aluminum. I'll ask him to post the details
here if you guys like.
Lance.

Ouch, that brings back memories. Bad ones. Hope your son faired as well as
I did, with only a cut on the chin and a few stitches to remind me.
I did exactly the same thing when I was a younger man - about 20 or so.
Damage sounds almost identical also, even down to the trans not holding.
The engine faired pretty well, water pump was shot, timing cover cracked.
Of course, in the early '80s parts were plentiful in the junkyards, so no
issues fixing it up. As a bonus, it was my introduction to bodywork - I had
more time than money, so all the work, including paint, I completed.
Now here's the part that still hurts: it was a '67 K code. And I sold it
for $2500 a few years later. Needed a car with air (and real mufflers) to
take out the ladies. <Sigh>

Well, it happened?
My son wrecked his 66 coupe tonight?
He wasn?t paying enough attention to the car in front of him, and slammed
right into it!!!
I haven?t finished assessing the damage yet, but I figure about $2500 in
body damage to his car. The hood, the bumper, the valence, grill,
radiator support, radiator, both fenders & headlight buckets. I think I
can percussion engineer most of the damage to the inner fenders & aprons.

Now that it?s daylight, I?ve taken more pictures of the damage & posted them at my website:
robaldo.com/CarWreck
I?ve also included a picture of the gas cap to match the radiator cap for those who?ve been asking about it.

Mail From: mustang (Brandon Peskin)
I was there almost 4-years to the day ago:
photos.peskin.org/albums/mustang/normal_DSC01238.jpg
photos.peskin.org/displayimage.php?album=36&pos=63
photos.peskin.org/displayimage.php?album=36&pos=64
photos.peskin.org/displayimage.php?album=36&pos=65
Same thing happened here:
The fan was pushed into the radiator, radiator support bent in, both
fenders, bumper, valance, stone deflector all toast in addition to the
fan and the radiator. I *believe* the engine was still running after
the hit, but I was on the freeway during rush hour and very shaken up
so I don't exactly remember. It was bleeding coolant onto the freeway.
I still need a hood (its bent a bit) but I've been living with it.
The parts were like $1400 (I'll find the receipt somewhere so you can
get an idea of the total as I ordered all the parts at once), and the
insurance company had to send somebody out to SEE the car (ie, make
sure it wasn't a clunker) and did NOT total it. I have the car insured
for something like $10,000 with full coverage. The most expensive part
was the paint. I bought the parts from Mustangs Plus myself, sent them
the receipts and a check was in the mail.
I think the frame on the left side is 1/4 to 1/2" shorter than the
right side from this event. One of these days when I get the dough
I'll get it straightened out, but the car drives fine.

A 2000 Ford Mustang!
It was his Ex-Girfriend! They remain friends and were going to dinner. She
stopped, he didn't...
He shoved her into the car in front of her hard enough to set off the
airbags. I imagine her car is totaled.
I'm about 50/50 on whether or not I think the adjuster will total his car.
The damage "looks" bad, but there's no frame damage and most of the damage
is easily fixed with new bolt-on panels.
Only the core support will need cutting out & welding. I can do that myself
in an afternoon.
Lance.

If they want to total it, you may have to make arrangements to buy it back
from them. Hopefully they will fix it. Totaling the car may mark the

I've thought about it quite a bit over the past two days...
If they do decide to total it, I will try to get them to let me buy it back
for salvage value.
I know it will give it a salvage title, but that really doesn't matter to
me. I don't intend to ever sell it, so a salvage title isn't so bad.
I know I may change my mind about selling it one day, but I just don't think
a salvage title on a 45 year old car is necessarily a "death sentence" for
sales. MANY classic Mustangs, including some of the ones Shelby resurrected
a few years ago when he was making them again have been restored & recovered
from the salvage yard...
Of course, HIS restorations got new VIN's when he did it... I don't think
the state will do that for little ole me.
Lance.

If they want to total it, you may have to make arrangements to buy it back
from them. Hopefully they will fix it. Totaling the car may mark the
title.

I've thought about it quite a bit over the past two days...
If they do decide to total it, I will try to get them to let me buy it back
for salvage value.
I know it will give it a salvage title, but that really doesn't matter to
me. I don't intend to ever sell it, so a salvage title isn't so bad.
I know I may change my mind about selling it one day, but I just don't think

.... and neither did the Feds, if you're referring to Unique Performance and
the Eleanor cars and VIN tampering...... they got busted and Shelby got sued.....

Nah, they were going out for some dinner. It was a very friendly break up
and they're still good friends, just not dating.
He was following her car to the restaurant. She stopped, he didn't.
smash...

I was only joking. I've owned my mustang since I was in high school and I
did some pretty stupid things with my beloved stang back then, but I would
never have sacrificed it for a girl.
