I have a '66 Mustang 289. A friend of mine told me that only the 6
cylinders had a seal on the top of the radiator brace. Is that true?

Yup. 6 cylinders and big blocks. I put one on my 289 and it helps. I keep
mine on with two butterfly clips so I can quickly and easily remove it for a
show.

That seal was used "primarily" on the 6 cyls.
Officially it was on these cars:
64-66 6 cyl only.
67-70 6 cyl and the 390's & 428's.
But I remember reading in Mustang Monthly that it is not uncommon for it to have
been put on 289's and 302's depending on what the particular manufacturing plant
was doing at the time.
So if it looks like it was original, even on a 289, I'd keep it.

Are you talking about something that bridges the gap between the radiator
support and the radiator? I so, the 71-73 all had them.

Does that radiator gasket keep the bugs out from under the hood then?
I get quite a build up above the carb.

Mail From: wal (Wal Marshall)
I assume we are talking about the rubber seal that sits along on top of the
radiator support panel and seals the gap between the panel and the hood. Its
attached at the rear so the front of the seal floats and can lift and seal
when air comes in from the front, forcing more air through the radiator.
My 428CJ doesn't have its seal and I plan to replace it .They seem to be
retained by "staples" . but what do the staples attach to? Is there a
separate rubber strip that (glues?) to the underside of the radiator support
rail , that the seal staples onto ??
Cheers, Wal Marshall

Wal--
The ones I've seen installed at shows had the staples on the edges of the
strip through the radiator support. Nothing underneath that I've seen. I
don't want to poke any more holes in my car than need be, hence my use of
the clips. (Plus, since it isn't "correct," at a MCA show, I'd lose
points.) In a nutshell, the seal and a can of redline watter wetter keep my
daily driver cooler in the hot temps of SE Louisiana.
It does keep air from going over the radiator and moving through it. It
helped my car's temp and my AC, too. I hadn't thought about it, but it
would also keep bugs out, too. (We have huge dragonflies that manage to
wedge themselves in every crevice of the car.)

The staples go right into the metal. Look under the old seal and you
will find the tiny holes that the staples were in.
I drilled out several holes along the top and use POP rivets. Its not
stock but it looks good and it keeps the seal in place.
The rivets are very simple to remove.

On the 71-73's, they're held in place by clips.

Hi Guys,
I've researched this a bit already for 65- and 66 mustangs. My 65 C code
convertible has the strip running over the radiator support as well, and a 6cyl
mustang I had also had it. Most folks I talked to (me included) thought that
it was only installed on 6cylinder mustangs. I talked to a judge at one show,
as mine seems to be original, with staples, and it's a C code 289.
He told me that they were installed "on occasion" on some V-8 cars. No one
know why only a few V-8 cars got them. He did not know, and didn't think anyone
knew, what set of options would have made them install it on a v-8.
I have decided to leave mine on (at least for now, and the last ten years or
so..)
If you want to compare options to see if there is something similar between
our two 289 cars, feel free to email me offline.
FWIW
