It's a moot point for me, since I already bought, & installed what I wanted with the T-5 transmission upgrade I made...an 8 inch 3.55 posi third member.

But the mechanic that made the swap, told me he believed that the existing center section he removed was a 2.80 posi. Are there any ways to visually determine a posi or open 3rd member? Casting numbers or otherwise?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Still in the car?
Jack up the rear so both tires are off the ground. Put the trans in neutral and turn a tire by hand. If the other wheel turns in the opposite direction, you have an open unit. If it turns with you or not at all you have a posi.

Out of the car?
look down the hole for the axels, do you see a sun gear? If so you have an open unit. You could try sticking the axels back in and have a friend hold one while you turn the other. it'll work as I described above.
You can also google search the part number I'm sure you can find something.

Chris,

Thanks much for the info.

It's out of the car, and the axels are back in the rear. So, I'll try Googling numbers off the member.

Mike
