8-inch limited slip differential

I have a 67 Mustang and have rebuilt the 289 with a lot of speed parts. =
It has a C4 tranny. However, the car is a dog off the line because of =
an 8-inch open rear end with 2.79 gear. =20

I'd like to upgrade the rear end by increasing the ratio to about 3.50 =
and adding some type of limited-slip. Is there any way to do this =
cheaply and without removing the entire rear end? I'd like to be able =
to find a 8-inch rear end chunk that would work at a junkyard. However, =
I don't even know where to start. Did the 8-inch rear end make it into =
the 1970's or 1980's where I could find one off a junkyard car? Would =
any of them have limited slip differentials? If so, is there a =
reference where I could get the code numbers so that if I find a rearend =
in a junkyard, I'll know what it is? Any help would be much =
appreciated, as I can't afford to spend $ 800 on brand new limited slip =
differential and gears. =20

You need to learn how to recognize an 8 inch just by looking at it. It's
pretty easy when you start looking at the different rearends Ford used. It
seems like I read that Mustang II's are a good place to look. When you find
one, you need to check the tag for 3L50. The "L" means it is a posi. The
open rears would have 3.50 on the tag. Those numbers correspond the the
gear ratio.

Hope that helps. There is another car that is a good donor, but I can't
remember off the top of my head.

Walter, your problem in finding what you want is that most cars have the peg
leg ratios even if equipped with a limited slip. Remember that fuel economy
was a huge issue in the 70's and 80's. You can look for a Mustang II or a
light truck or van to hopefully get what you want. I think your best bet
might be to just buy a new ring and pinion gear and an Auburn unit new.

Rotsa Ruck. An 8" limited is way more unique than a 9" limited and you
just about never find one in the yards anymore. Our big yard charges $75
for a 9" center section, so if anyone sees a limited center, it's gone even
if you don;t need it. Even Chevy guys nab 'em and sell 'em to the circle
trackers or trade for parts. A truck or a fancy upgrade model (mercury?)
is your best bet. The last 8" "posi" I heard about was a couple of years
ago and it was $250 used and neede a rebuild. You might contact Currie
Enterprises and see what they have.
Question - why are you hot for the limited?

You are not buying a posi diff in an 8". Since Posi is a GM term for LSD.
Next thing you know we will call our engines 350's and our 'Stangs
Camaro's....
