Hi Gang,

Looked at a '72 Mach I that is for sale at a local
dealer in Winchester, VA

equipment includes (although I did not see everything)

351-2V (According to the air cleaner sticker)
Automatic (FMX or C4?)
no air
AM/FM radio
rear wing

It has the original paint, and Mach I graphics. Paint
is a little faded, body has several small dents, no rust
on the body (although I didn't look at the floor pans, etc),
the bumpers have some rust on them.

Interior looks clean. According to the sales person, the
car has had 1 owner.

They are asking $8500. I'm thinking this is too much.

Any suggestions as to how much I should offer.

TIA,

Glenn Lepore

Glenn: if VA has the similar law to NJ and Maryland (and D.C., i think),
if you ask the dealer, they must give you the previous owner's name, lka
and lk telephone number so you may contact them to find out if the
dealer is masking any problems with the car. this may be part of the
fed consumer protection schema, if not state specific. worth checking
out.

If the car is titled in Virginia then you can visit the DMV with the VIN
of the car and for a fee (I think $20) they will give you the Title
History. From this you should be able to track down the previous owners
and find out what the car has been through.

You're right, It is too much.... If the Mach 1 was a 69 or 70, maybe $8500
would be in the ballpark. That car (The way you described it) sounds like
it's worth more like $4000-$5000 tops..... and even that may be too much.

Tony.

This is sort of true. In Virginia you have to send a letter to
the DMV in Richmond to have a title search performed, and they
charge $5 for each previous owner uncovered. They will NOT
tell you the name(s) and/or addresses of previous owners, citing
privacy concerns. It also took me several phone calls and a few
months to get a response.

I just went through this mess with my own car. Thankfully it
had also been registered in Maryland, where that same search
can be done on a walk-in basis at the Glen Burnie office, and
for $5 per previous owner they give you names and addresses.

Last month I was at a DMV in Springfield VA. I was having trouble with
the title on a '70 coupe that I had purchased. Apparently the previous
owner had never registered the car and the title that he gave me was
signed by the previous owner (one year prior). I was a little worried
that I wouldn't be able to title the car since the previous owner had
never registered it and the title had some of the information written
over with a marker(date of sale, price). The lady running the
information desk told me that I could not title the car with the current
title containing the mark overs, but I could research the title of the
car for a $20 fee. She gave me the form to fill out and I waited to see
the lady who handles titles. When I arrived at her window I showed her
the title and she said that she could run the title check for me, but
that it wasn't nescessary because she was happy to go ahead and title
the car for me (lucky me...).

The point is that you can run a title check at the DMV. I do not know
what level of information it will provide you with though.

There is also an on-line service that will check out your title
information for you. The site is:
