Almost done with the conversion (just waiting for the driveshaft to get back for the machine shop), and thought that I would share what I found out in doing it.
1. The C-4 flexplate that was on my vehicle did not match up to the AOD (even though the part number that was listed was the same for a AOD as a C-4). Since my engine is a 351W (C9OE) and uses a 28oz balance, I could not use the one from the donor car (it had a 50oz balance). I got one from a 83 LTD with a 302 and AOD combo.
2. Even though I could remove the C-4 without taking the headers off, There was no way to install the AOD untill they where removed.
3. The C-4 yoke is about 2 1/2 inches longer than the AOD yoke. You do need to get one.
4. Drive shaft. The drive shaft would install with the AOD, but there was only 1/4 inch of freeplay. This turned out not to be enough. There was vibrations at 30mph and over. Had to remove drive shaft and get 3/4 inch shaved off.
While there where problems, The install was pretty easy. The total cost is as follows.
Trans mount: 129.00
Lokar TV cable: 69.00 (replaces kick down)
Filter and Fluid: 35.00
Trans and Yoke: 320.00
Drive shaft (cut and balance): 91.00
Use of bay with a Lift (I am lazy) : 50.00
For a total of 694.00.
Install took about 1 day.

Where did you get the transmission mount? I had to have one made for my
conversion because all the vendors had them back ordered for over 6
months.

I also was able to use my drive shaft without any modification. I also
have a 302 which may have been the difference.

I haven't done this type of swap but have done other engine swaps (Pontiac and Buick to small block Chevy). I'd be careful about the driveshaft length - the issue isn't whether it will work; there must be suffifient free play in order not to over stress the bushings in the transmission. There is a protocol for measuring the distance between the tailshaft and the universal joint in order to determine the correct length for the driveshaft. Unfortunately the last time I did this was about 15 years ago and don't recall the resource I used (probably Car Craft magazine).

Darkhhorse Preformance. They had the best prices. The mount was about
the same, but the lokar cable was about $40.00 cheaper.

After I made the swap I took it to a transmission shop to have them
bless everything and adjust the kickdown cable. I was concerned about
the driveshaft length also but, they said it was fine and had enough
movement.

I haven't done this type of swap but have done other engine swaps
(Pontiac and Buick to small block Chevy). I'd be careful about the
driveshaft length - the issue isn't whether it will work; there must be
suffifient free play in order not to over stress the bushings in the
transmission. There is a protocol for measuring the distance between
the tailshaft and the universal joint in order to determine the correct
length for the driveshaft. Unfortunately the last time I did this was
about 15 years ago and don't recall the resource I used (probably Car
Craft magazine).
