After discovering that my open differential was on the verge of self =
destruction due to a broken pinion shaft pin which also lead to =
additional damage to the differential itself, I decided now would be a =
good time to go with the limited slip unit. I ended up purchasing an =
Auburn limited slip unit from West Coast Differentials as well as a new =
ring and pinion with a 3.55 ratio. Has anyone any experience with these =
products? The 8" does not have a drain plug. Has anyone ever drilled =
and tapped a hole for a way to drain the rearend fluid? If so where is =
a good location? It seems like it would be a good idea after breaking =
in the new components. Boy is this going to be more fun than my 2.79 =
open ; )

That's what you get when you slide under the back of the car real quick and
hit your head on the center section. Also, a threaded "port" that is
welded over a hole and plugged with a cap or threaded plug to allow drainage.

It's called a "bung"....its a drilled & threaded circular piece that is
welded over the hole you drill in the housing. This is where you thread in
the drain plug. This way the drain plug does not protrude into the housing.

You do not drill & tap the housing itself. It would surely leak.

Scott,

Do you mind telling us what West Coast charged for the Auburn with 3.55's? I'm thinking about doing the same thing in the next year or so.

Jeff,

West Coast charged 351.28 for the Auburn limited slip and they wanted 195.00
for the ring and pinion (but I told them Summit sells Richmond for 188.00
and after a snide remark regarding Richmond gears they matched the price of
188.00) and then the necessary bearings for 85.00 (which is a deal becaused
I just purchased Summits rearend rebuild kit for 106.99 which I now must
return.)
