67 Shelby restoration: stock vs vintage race

I have a 1967 Shelby GT350 that I plan on restoring some day, money
being the determining factor. The car needs a few hard to find parts
and new quarter panels ect, etc. I can't decide how I should restore
the car: stock original , original but with bolt on performance parts
(so I can have a little fun at open track events), or all out vintage
race with roll bar etc. (so I can have a lot of fun). Another factor is
I have a 67 6 cyl fastback project car that I could make into a
Shelby/racecar replica and still have fun at the track without hacking
up the REAL Shelby. Please give me your thoughts on this. Thanks, Todd

Todd, I have a 70 GT350 that I do a lot of open track events and vintage
racing that has a 408, 5-speed,4-wheel discs,etc.... (You may have seen it
in the last Mustang monthly), I own (at last count)around 44 fords and
mercurys ranging from trailer queen Shelbys to just drivers, my personal
opinion, after doing the show thing and the racing is you just can't beat
the racing. However, unless you just have money to burn, it is better off
to race a vehicle that is not a real shelby. I just am not 100% comfortable
in my shelby anymore because I have broken into the 170 mph range at some
big tracks and it would take major modification to make the car totally
safe at that level. I am currently restoring an old Nascar cyclone that
will fit the bill a lot better. You should take the 6 cyl car and prepare
it for track use. You will be replacing all the suspension anyway so it
doesn't matter if it is a 6 cyl car or not. The early model cars can be
made to pull more G's than the late models for the same money or less. Talk
to the guys at Global West. Or let me know off-list where you are and I
might be able to put you in touch with someone close to you. At 12:22 AM
