It is also possible, and I think not that difficult, to convert to the
3-speed transmission used with the V-8 engines. I saw an article about this
in one of the Mustang magazines within the last couple of years. Probably
saw it in 'Mustang and Fords'.
It sounded like a 4-speed swap would also be reasonable which, since there
are kits available to convert V-8 4-speed cars to 5-speeds, implies that
-that- swap should be doable... :-) :-) :-)
But, what do -I- know..? ;-)

My 64 1/2 Convertible has a '67 6-cyl 3-speed mated to a '69 302. So yes
it is
possible and it works fine. Really wish I had a 4-speed but this will
have to do until
I can find one I can afford. The bad thing about the 3-speed is the
transition time
from 2nd to 3rd...takes forever to wind out 2nd!!

It can be done, but if I remember correctly from such a swap that a
friend
and I did quite some time ago, it requires a different bellhousing (we
used
one from an early '70's Maverick) and some trickery to mate the
driveshaft
at both ends. The yoke at the back of the tranny is different (larger)
on
the V8 3-speed, so we ended up having V8 and I6 driveshafts cut and
welded to match the V8 tranny on the front and the I6 rear end at the
back.
There may be clutch considerations, as well. This was quite a while
ago,
so I don't remember all the details.
