Here's what I did on my '65 coupe:

I bought a pair of surface-mount speakers of decent quality (they were
Pioneer 3-ways in a sort of oval shape) and painted them with interior
paint to match the panels beside the rear seat. I placed them vertically
right behind the window cranks, leaving enough room for the cranks to
rotate. Attach them with that "Super Velcro" tape (it's clear and can be
found at Home Depot) so you can remove them easily for shows or
whatever. I spliced some connectors (the kind like on a trailer wiring
harness) to the wires on each side, to further aid quick removal.

They sound pretty good (I have the lame-o particle board speaker thingie
in the dash as well, but keep the fader toward the rear), sort of blend
in with the stock interior, can be removed in a snap, and don't leave
holes in anything.

The only real downside is that anyone riding in back has to be careful
about knocking them off (easy to plop back into place).
