This has to be a familiar question:
When you switch a 5.0 to a front sump oil pan and change the timing
chain cover to an earlier one with the dipstick tube, how do you
plug the hole in the side of the block casting where the dipstick
used to be?
I've seen a tech article where a tapered wooden plug was pounded
into the hole, but I thought perhaps there may be another method.
Any ideas?

Hi Gary,
I tapped the hole and screwed a bolt in it with teflon tape.
It's a one way solution, I'll never be able to use the
side dip stick with this block.

You could use a heli coil and small bolt w/ teflon tape to prevent leaking.

Funny you should mention this. When I put the 5.0L in my '69
convertible, I had this puzzling oil leak. Seems it only occurred under
acceleration and was especially bad when I went autocrossing. Oil would
blow all over the exhaust manifolds and smoke like crazy. At first I
thought it was coming from the valve covers or around the head, but
these were relatively dry. Well, you already know where it was coming
from. I found a fairly short bolt that fit and bottomed out in the
hole. Put some hi-temp RTV on it and its held up so far.

I don't like the wood idea, but it works.
That hole is drilled 3/8" which is only .007" over the standard
letter U tap drill for a 7/16"-14 thread. You can tap the hole part
way through and install a Permatex coated set screw.
Also, unless your 5.0L cover is late enough to be missing the fuel
pump mounting and you need it, the covers I've seen have all had the
boss for the dipstick hole. You can drill that and avoid buying
the cover.

You definately have 302 heads, there should be a 302 cast into the block,
under the intake that will tell which block you have.
