Question for the carburetor guys: Which way does the spacer go back
onto the intake manifold...hollow side up or down? And which gasket
is the lower and which is the upper? One has a square cut out and the
other has 4 semi-circular cut outs. Thanks.

Hollow side down with the PCV nipple at the back. Don't forget to use
gaskets on both sides.

If you're referring to the carb gaskets that come with a rebuild kit,
neither one is used for placing between the space and the intake. The
gaskets they give you are for installing the carb to the spacer or on top of
a single plane intake (like an Edlebrock Torker). They never give you the
gasket in the kit that goes between the spacer and the intake since you're
not rebuilding the spacer but the carb.
For the correct gasket, you either have to get one from Ford or from the
parts store. FelPro use to carry both the carb and spacer gaskets in the
complete gasket set and the intake replacement kit and Mr Gasket use to
carry a 4-hole one that would work. Might try Summit or Jegs for those.
In a pinch you can use the square hole gasket, but then, depending on the
thickness of that gasket, you change the air flow characteristics of the
four ports between the intake and carb by tying them together in that area.
And as Paul stated, the open side goes facing down with the PCV port facing
the rear.

Well, I've found 2 different gaskets - one by Mr. gasket and one by
Felpro. The Felpro gasket is thin, like the square cut out gasket
that came with my rebuild kit. The Mr. Gasket gasket is much thicker,
like the carb/spacer gasket that came with the kit. Which one is
correct? In other words, is the manifold/spacer gasket supposed to be
the same thickness as the carb/spacer gasket? Thanks.

Doesn't really matter. You only need it to seal the edges of the spacer. I
would use the thinner under the spacer and the thicker under the carb. Be
careful NOT to OVERTIGHTEN the carb hold down nuts as you can crack the base
plate. If the parts are in good condition, either will work.

Thinner gasket goes between the intake and spacer plate.
Thicker gasket is used between space and carb.
If that thicker gasket is as thick as some I've used, they have plastic
spacers at each stud hole and the actual gasket is something like 3/16-1/4"
thick. That thickness makes a great insulator between the carb and
engine/spacer. The plastic spacers keep you from compresssing the gasket
down too much and thus bending the mounting ears on the bottoom of the carb.
Reasonable snugness on the four nuts is all you need to bolt the carb down -
they're not lug nuts people! The factory service manual has torque specs for
them, it's something like 12-18 inch pounds - IIRC.

I got the correct gaskets and I am ready mount the manifold back on
the block. I now have another gasket question: What type of adhesive
do I use on the intake manifold gaskets? The installation
instructions say to use "adhesive" on the gaskets and end seals and it
just says the adhesive should be dry in about 15 minutes. I don't
think they mean Silicone RTV since this takes much longer to dry. It
also specifically says to put a dob of silicone RTV at the end seal
joints. They aren't specific about the type of adhesive though.
Thanks!

I've always installed intake manifold gaskets dry, except
for the water and valley ends. The bead built into the
gasket should be sufficient to seal the ports.

I've always installed intake manifold gaskets dry, except
for the water and valley ends. The bead built into the
gasket should be sufficient to seal the ports.

Agree. If the surfaces are clean enough, the gasket will seal fine. Sone
aircraft permatex (thin coat) around water passages before applying the gasket
is also OK. I use Felpro and the end seals come coated with an adhesive. I
usually discard the end seals and use a bead of high temp RTV. Let it set up
for about 20 minutes then install the intake. Get some long 5/16 bolta (4)
and cut the heads off - screw into some of the holes and use as guide pins to
set the intake down straight on the gaskets.

I got the correct gaskets and I am ready mount the manifold back on the
block. I now have another gasket question: What type of adhesive do I
use on the intake manifold gaskets? The installation instructions say
to use "adhesive" on the gaskets and end seals and it just says the
adhesive should be dry in about 15 minutes. I don't think they mean
Silicone RTV since this takes much longer to dry. It also specifically
says to put a dob of silicone RTV at the end seal joints. They aren't
specific about the type of adhesive though. Thanks!

I ended up getting a can of Copper high heat gasket sealer. It seams
the main reason for the adhesive is just to hold the gaskets and end
seals in place while positioning the intake...it's a bit cumbersome
getting that chunk of iron back on the block while bending over the
fender. Anyway, I got almost everything put back together last night.
Just have to replace the fluids, set the initial timing and hopefully
fire it up this weekend...I'll keep you all posted.

Mail From: mahilly (Mike H)
I ended up getting a can of Copper high heat gasket sealer. It seams
the main reason for the adhesive is just to hold the gaskets and end
seals in place while positioning the intake...it's a bit cumbersome
getting that chunk of iron back on the block while bending over the
fender. Anyway, I got almost everything put back together last night.
Just have to replace the fluids, set the initial timing and hopefully
fire it up this weekend...I'll keep you all posted.
