Hello,

Does anyone have any information on the kit to convert a '65 6-cyl with a
three speed to a 5 speed?? Someone posted that one is sold by one of the
vendors, but I didn't get which one. I have the 5 speed and would like to
get it in the old coupe. Have any of you done this to an early 6 cyl.
car?

Thanks,

Dan Triplett

Dan,

I helped do this once. What you will need is a '67-up six cylinder
bellhousing. Most '66 200 ci blocks should be able to accomodate the later
bellhousing. '65 blocks, both 170 ci and 200 ci, seem to be missing the top
two bolt holes required to mount the later bellhousing.

On the transmission side the '67-up 3.03 three-speed has the same mounting
pattern as a top loader. The '66 uses what's known as a 2.77 transmission
which has a different mounting pattern.

Then you use all the same parts as required to put a 5-speed in a V-8. That
includes a belhousing adapter, crossmember, shifter, T-5 yoke, and
shortening the driveshaft.

You keep the original flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, and
clutch release mechanism.

You can't use the late T-5 5.0 bellhousing. It will not fit the engine.
Also, you can't use the 4 cylinder T-5 transmissions from Rangers, Mustangs
or T-bird Turbo coupes. They have a longer input shaft and the pilot is
different. The Ranger's shifter is in the wrong location. And despite
similarities, you can't use the GM T-5's, either.

Jack
