Well, you all should know. 3.15 hours to do. the old one was stuck
tight, despite my dripping penetrating oil 2x/day for 5 days straight,
having used a nail punch to push in a part of the tube. vice grips
did not work. two hours working with the punch did not work. an easy
out, that worked. took about a half hour and one half pint of
penetrating oil.
i used the easy out with an adjustable. no power tools.
next, a gallon of 5 weight sewing oil poured down the hole & drained
from the oil plug, and on goes the new stick, nos from my friendly
ford dealer, and cheaper than the cheap chrome ones. imagine that.
thanks everyone...

>>> Allen's posted reply to my inquiry:
Personally, I'd consider just using a set-punch
and ballpeen. Find a raised edge you can catch
and give it a couple good, clean whacks...you're
trying to fold (or collapse) it "inward", upon
itself. This will give you room to grab it with
the needlenose lockjaw pliers - should pull out
pretty easily.
