I was hoping that there is someone out there that knows the answers
to a few questions before we try and find out the hard way. Here is the
story. I currently have a 289, and a toploader in my '66 fastback G.T.
and my brother has a 351W in his '67 G.T.A. Coupe. Well, my brother's friend
just gave him a 390 and a C6, so he is going to give me his 351W. My
questions are:

1. Is there anything that we will have to change in the 67 to put in
the 390 in the place of the 351W? (it has PS, PDB, and AC)
2. I plan on getting either a Tremec or a T-5, will they also work
fine with the 351W? (I don't see why not)
3. I recently purchased a set of DynoMax jet-hot coated headers for
the '66 with a 289, is there any reason that the small amount of extra width
on the 351W would make it so that they would be unuseable on a 351W in the
'66? (manual steering, manual disks)
4. What headers would be suggested for the '67 with a 390?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I would be very interested in purchasing your toploader if you wish to sell
it....if so where are you located?

I live in the Columbia River Gorge, right outside of Portland Or,
however, I'm sorry, but I cannot see myself selling the toploader. I try to
make sure that everything that I am doing to my car will be easy to undo
later on down the road (since it is an original G.T. Fastback, candyapple
red, black interior, A-code etc). I have all my original parts in my garage.
Good luck on finding one though.

If you have all of the bracketry and pulleys this will be MUCH easier. I
had an S code 67 GT years ago and am not a big fan of that combination
in a Mustang. If it was a 428CJ I could live with the big block (wink)
but the 390 is a huge hunk of torque and thats about it. Personally I'd
stay with the Windsor and pump it up a bit.

As far as I know (I have a 67 with 351W) you will need highly
specialized headers for this swap, they are advertised in the Mustang
magazines. The 64-66 engine compartment will barely hold the 351, using
your headers is out of the question, and you might have some hood
clearance problems depending on your choice of manifold and air cleaner.

Hello,
Neither of these tranny's is as strong as the toploader, and you're
putting another 62 cubes behind it. Just be careful.
And those extra 62 cubes are all torque. The 351W being just a tall
deck stroked 302, it's more of a low RPM torquer. Harder on trannies and a
narrower rev band.

Travis,

It seems to me that the width isn't an issue (you will probably have to
dent the shock towers or headers or both, but others on this list have
made a 351W fit without too much difficulty). What I see as a possible
issue is the height of the exhaust ports on the 351W - they're 1 inch
higher up (due to the engine being 1 inch taller) and your headers may
not be tall enough to keep from hitting the bottom of the car. On the
other hand, some headers are made extra tall so that they can be used on
either the 289/302 or 351W - when used on a 289/302, they hang down way
too far, and when used with a 351W, they fit snugly up against the
bottom of the car.
