Mustang/boaters out there:

Ever heard of a '67 Donzi Sweet 16 speed boat? Apparently 260's and
289's went into these fiberglass speed boats back in the late '60's. I
got a call from a gal last night looking for aluminum exhaust manifolds.
Anybody know of any of these parts around? Also, I understand
Holman-Moody prepared engines for some of these boats. I just get a kick
out of the history of it all. Can anyone shed more light on this?

Thanks,

Max Koschmeder

Sure, my pal Lou had one for awhile and I've sold a few
Holman-Moody marine parts to customers, over the years.
His was from '67 - outrageously fast. Without trimtabs,
there was no steering the thing past its own torque.

Yeah, they were real playboy's toys...single wraparound
"L" bench done in tuck & roll, plus the "driver's" chair.
The dash was all Stewart-Warner b/w gauges, with a small
old-style Grant wheel - chrome spokes and fat metalflake
vinyl rim. What a kick!

If not most.

Don Zimmerman was arguably the most heralded boat racer
of the period. His successes were often touted in Ford
and Autolite advertising. "Donzis" (with a European Z)
used Ford engines for the first few years, then switched
to GM power.

H-M engines used all their standard marine parts, like
the "HM" or "hmm" intake and those aforementioned "hmm"
water-jacketed heat exchangers. Lots of uniquely cast
parts, special mounts, plus "Holman-Moody" certification
on alternator & block...and a neat brass flame-arrestor
carb screen.

Lou's Donzi still wore an original skin of banana yellow
*metalflake* gel-coat. Cute story: Lou wanted to give
the thing a name, especially after a near-fatal accident.
So he asked a local artist to do up the engine cover in a
large, fancy black script. When the guy was finished, he
tried to deliver it but found Lou wasn't available. His
business and home are in the same building, so the artist
figured it was Ok to leave the decklid propped up against
the front door, street-side, awaiting Lou's return.

Imagine how Lou, who's a mortician, felt when he returned
to see it sitting there - boldly lettered "Death Wish". ;-)

Never heard of the specific boat but we do know some marine applications
were assemblied. I've had a couple of the intakes. Really odd, low, low
profile and breather tub cast into it also.

Allen,

Thanks for the interesting background information. I will pass this on
the gal from the East Coast. I have a 260 with the odd looking and
very low, Al. 2V intake. It also has a unique Al. front cover and oil
pan but, no Exhaust Manifolds.

Do you have any suggestions as to whom one could contact to begin a
search for a pair of these " "hmm" water-jacketed heat exchangers" ?

Thanks again,

Max Koschmeder

Frankly, no - they're very rare. You might keep
in touch with me off-list, as those manifolds are
something I'd normally buy if a set turned up.
