First, let it be known I am far from an expert. All this information can
be gleaned off the WWW if you do a little work. Or if you read magazines
regularly, they usually have articles on things like how filters and oil
work. What I *do* know is what every mechanic out there should know and
should pass along to his/her customers. Unfortunately quite a few are
clueless, so if yours suggests you fill your crankcase with gasoline to
flush it out... And if *I* am wrong, speak up and tell me.
As for the rest. I think the topic has been covered quite thoroughly. So
change you oil every 3K miles, unless you are on a cross country trip,
in which case you have my permission to let it go for 5K or so.
Also, change your transmission and differential oils every 30K. Flush
your cooling system every 3 years or 36K miles and replace your
thermostat if the car doesn't get into operating temperature quickly. A
cold engine wears faster than a warm one. As for your brakes. Every 2
years regardless of mileage.
Of course batteries, belts, hoses, filters, and whatnot should also be
replaced BEFORE they give out. Do these simple things and your car will
last two to three times as long as it would have normally. I won't give
a mileage quote because there are many other variables, such as how you
drive. But in general, good maintenance leads to a lot less problems
down the road.
These aren't big secrets. Oil is cheap, no corporations are getting rich
off you changing your fluids more frequently. If anything they get
richer by having you buy a new car (or engine) more frequently. OTOH I
haven't seen the Oliver Stone movie version of Consumer Reports on the
conspiracy to get us to change our oil more often than is necessary.
